As Good As It Gets
As Good As It Gets starring Jack Nicholson, Helen Hunt, and Greg Kinnear is a disappointing movie. My aunt, my mom, my nana, and even my sister think this is a cute movie. I disagree. I think it is boring and takes a lot of shots at trying to be funny but does not succeed most of the time.
Jack Nicholson, as Melvin Udall, a grumpy old man with obsessive compulsive disorder and a bad mouth. He intimidates everyone with his mean attitude. Melvin writes for a living at his apartment.
Helen Hunt, is Carol Connelly, a waitress at Melvin’s favorite restaurant of which he eats daily. She is also a caring mother. Her son Spencer is the most important thing in her life. Unfortunately Spencer is very sick and is always need of medical attention. Him being so vulnerable distracts Carol from having a love life.
Greg Kinnear plays a gay man named Simon Bishop. Simon lives in Melvin’s apartment complex with his adorable dog Verdell.
Simon is an artist and when working with a model that he found on the street the model’s friends break in and start robbing Simon. Simon walks in on them and one of them attacks Simon and beats the him to a bloody pulp. While Simon is in the hospital, his assistant Frank (Cube Gooding Jr.) gives Verdell to the mean neighbor, Melvin. At first, Melvin doesn’t like the dog but then he is happy to have someone to talk to and go places with. And the dog starts to love Melvin.
Carol’s son has a fever and gets really sick so she doesn’t go to work. Melvin has no idea what to do because Carol isn’t at the restaurant to wait on him. His whole day is screwed up because he hasn’t eating breakfast. He goes to Carol’s house to see why she isn’t at work. He saw that her son was really sick and hired a serious doctor the next day for her son so that she could go back to work and wait on him at the restaurant. Carol is so grateful she writes pages of how thankful she is to Melvin. Melvin doesn’t want to read them and didn’t want to hear her say thank you.
Simon returns home and wants his dog back. But Verdell likes staying with Melvin. Simon is also having a little money issues because of all his medical bills. He asked all his friends but they all turned him down, he is losing his apartment so he decides to go to the last place on the face of the Earth that he would ever go to, his parents. He can’t drive himself there so he asks Melvin to take him. But Melvin won’t go unless Carol goes. Carol is hesitating about going but her son is doing better with the new doctor and she does owe Melvin.
While on their little road trip Melvin makes Carol mad by insulting her. She has to get away from him so she decides to stay in Simon’s hotel room. While she is making a bath to relax Simon suddenly gets inspiration and decides to draw Carol and they stay up the whole night. He wants to draw and paint again and is just happy that he feels better about himself. He no longer wants his parents money, so they leave the next morning. Carol and Melvin are still not talking but when they finish driving Carol tells him that she never wants to see him again because he only makes her feel bad about herself. Since Simon doesn’t have any money, he has to stay with Melvin.
Later, Carol calls Melvin to tell him that he frustrates her but she likes being around him, he is a good guy. Melvin loves Carol but he doesn’t want to make the first move so he yells at Simon to give him advice. Since Simon is gay he knows a little better on what to do. Simon tell him to go over there, and tell Carol how he feels. Melvin does as he is told but can only stutter when he sees Carol. He finally says the right thing and they go for a walk for some biscuits for their first date.
This makes me really mad because Carol is always complaining about how awful of a man Melvin is and than they kiss and start dating. She constantly went back and forth from this man is great to this man is horrible. It was an annoying movie and it wasn’t funny at all. If this is As Good As It Gets, then life must really be bad.
